The drafting plate of the ring, with the black damascus, guitar wood, deer antler and guitar string accent labelled and the band measured at 8mm. The finished ring photographed on a dark surface, the coiled guitar string visible in the channel.

The plate, and the ring that came out of it.

An Instrument, Worn

Most rings that reference music reference it. This one contains it. The string running down the centre of the channel came off a guitar, and it is set into guitar wood, next to deer antler, inside a band of black damascus.

Four materials, none of them chosen to look like anything other than what they are.

The ring shown with its concept drawing, material samples and dimensions.

From idea to finished piece

Drawn first, then made.

Four materials

Nothing in it is decoration.

Close detail of the black damascus band, the etched layers reading pale against near black.
01

Black Damascus

The band

Folded steel, etched so the layers read light against dark. At 8mm it is the widest part of the ring and everything else sits inside it.

Close detail of the deer antler inlay, pale bone against the steel.
02

Deer Antler

The pale edge

Antler runs the full circumference beside the wood. It is the lightest thing in the ring, and it is what stops the band reading as all steel and shadow.

Close detail of the guitar wood inlay, warm brown grain running around the band.
03

Guitar Wood

The body

Wood from a guitar, set into the channel beside the antler. The grain is left to do what it does; nothing about it is corrected.

Close detail of the coiled guitar string set into the wood, its winding visible.

The reason

A real string, its winding still visible, laid into the wood and finished flush. Run a thumb across it and you can feel the coil.

Yours

Bring me the thing it has to contain.

A string, a piece of an instrument, something off a workbench. If it can be set into a channel and survive being worn, it can go in a ring.
